Step 3) Choose an Area of Interest

There are hundreds of positions available. Community Link’s [ database ] will make your search quick and easy. Here are a few sample opportunities to choose from:

Administration/Organization: recruit, interview, train and supervise volunteers; coordinate programs and activities; serve on boards or committees; work in a library, reception or bookkeeping.

Communication/ Public Relations: write/edit/design newsletters, press releases, scripts, promotional materials; liaise with the media; speak before groups, translate, interpret.

Computer Services: desktop publishing; programming; typing, data entry; website design and maintenance.

Corrections: mentoring young offenders; work with youth at risk.

Cultural Activities: teach arts, crafts; perform in community productions; assist in museums and art galleries; handle ticket sales; set up displays; take photographs for community groups; assist with theatrical productions.

Education: teach/tutor children or adults; teach english or other languages as a second language; provide educational advice; improve literacy.

Environment/Animals: participate in clean-up projects and recycling programs; assist in visitation programs bringing animals to shut-ins; promote conservation awareness; animal care assistance.

Fund-Raising: develop and coordinate activities; solicit funds door-to-door or by telephone; research potential sources of support; prepare fund-raising materials; assist with special events.

Gardening/Maintenance: make minor repairs; gardening; assist in warehouses or with moving; painting; building props.

Health: assist hospital or long term care patients; work with first aid team or rescue squad; assist in physiotherapy or occupational therapy programs; health education; work with the terminally ill.

Nutrition: deliver meals; nutrition advisor; prepare/distribute food; assist with breakfast or hot lunch programs; work in soup kitchens.

Recreation: coach sports; assist with community recreation programs; assist with special events; play cards and games with seniors.

Social Support: shopping assistant helper; companion to shut-ins; reading/writing for visually impaired; work with the mentally or physically disabled; assist with drug and alcohol recovery programs; career counselling; skills training.

Transportation: chauffeur; drive bus/van; pick up and deliver donated items for thrift shops or food banks.

Youth and Family Services: serve as a Big Sister/Big Brother; work in daycare; lead youth groups; assist in family drop-in care centre; be a Scout/Guide leader.
